The local climate poses distinct challenges for roof repair in Las Vegas. With the sun beating down and the temperatures soaring, rooftop materials simply don't last as long as they might in more temperate climes. Concerns like cracking and warping of shingles can (and often do) deteriorate into serious problems—water leaks, for example—that can lead all the way to dangerous mold growth inside your home. Covering the roof repair angle just wouldn't be complete without a sincere commendation of the importance of timely inspections and the payment of attention to the "Don't Wait Until It Drizzles to Fix It" rule.
When determining what kind of roof repair is needed, it's also important to consider the type and age of roofing material. Las Vegas homes use a variety of roofing materials—everything from asphalt shingles and tile to metal roofs—that have their own specific maintenance and repair requirements. Shingle roofs tend to become more vulnerable to wind, water, and other weather damage when they are past their 15- to 20-year lifespan. Tile roofs can last even longer, but they also become more vulnerable to maintenance issues as they near the end of their life cycle. Unlike wood, which rots, or asphalt, which can tear, the metal tiles used in a roof like the one I was part of replacing in July are extremely durable but still have maintenance issues that need to be addressed in a timely manner.
The materials are only half the story in roofing repairs. The design of the roof itself can make a simple fix much more complex. If your roof has a lot of different planes, for example, or if it has features like skylights and turrets, a repair may call for more specialized work than a team of generalists can handle. If they can't get to the space beneath the shingles, how can they be sure those shingles are doing their job right? Ventilation and drainage—"issues" that can come back to bite you if they're not addressed—are pretty much the same story as roofing materials. They're not just at issue in the ventilation and drainage problems I show you how to fix in the book. They're at issue in the problem you're trying to solve right now.
